Does My Dog Mirror My Emotions?
It's no secret that dogs are very in tune with our emotions and will respond to them. There is scientific proof that shows dogs can smell changes in our pheromones, hear our heartbeat, and can sense what we’re feeling by observing our body language and facial expressions.
I always tell Pet Parents that being calm is vital to productive training.
I'm often asked "Why does he listen so well to you?" .... or .... "How did you get her to calm down so quickly?" The answer is simple.... I'm always calm while training.
I speak evenly in both tone and pace
I move slowly and deliberately
I don’t get frustrated by mistakes or a pup losing focus
By remaining calm and being clear as to what I'm asking for I'm going to be far more successful than if I’m trying to rush through a lesson, constantly repeat cues, or become frustrated.
Just like us dogs need time to learn. By being patient, trying a different approach (if necessary), and allowing my pup to make mistakes I greatly increase the chance of my canine companion understanding what I’m asking of him/her.
A person doesn’t need to reprimand a dog. In fact usually what we perceive as disobedience or defiance is generally a lack of understanding or distraction. If I'm angry the pup will pick up on it and her behavior will change as a result. Now, I've set us both up for failure! Always be aware of your mood when training.
Being calm is vital to successful training. Our dogs mirror our moods. By exhibiting the appropriate emotional states I allow for more efficient and effective training.
